Sinfonia Viva – 3/4 European orchestras

Project with Viva Orchestra, UK. Submitted on July 29th 2014

In short, Sinfonia Viva is looking for two, maybe three, European orchestras interested in exploring participatory performing music activity which aspires to test different models and advance practice in the classical orchestra world. The idea would be to establish a small consortium to explore practice, share experience and develop models of delivery in this field. We are not looking for organisations with fully worked up proposals at this stage, more orchestras interested in getting involved. They may have experience in this area or may be new to it.

Whilst we do not have a fully developed plan ourselves we are thinking of maybe launching with a mini-conference here in Derby linked to our residency culmination in March 2015. Projects to be developed over the next year or so with culmination performances in 2016  and then a final coming together/conference/presentation for further sharing later in 2016. All partners would be invited to each other’s performance events.

We feel also that it would be good if this consortium included not only Education Managers (or whatever the equivalent is), but also senior managers who have a role in managing the artistic direction of the Orchestras. It would be exciting to see how Orchestras could embed this activity more centrally in their artistic mission. So each orchestra could perhaps put forward, say, up to three or four people to be part of the consortium. There would be money to support all this work if our application is successful.

I think we would like to look at a bit of geographical spread so maybe a Nordic country and a southern country and/or an eastern country.

As I say at this stage we are really looking for partners who would like to be involved and would be prepared to be mentioned in the initial proposal. We would work with them to develop a more detailed and relevant approach if we get through the first round.
